Short answer

Most early endgame deaths come from missing defensive layers, not only low damage. Before blaming the skill, check resistances, recovery, movement, crowd control risk, and whether your gear actually supports the build's stated defenses.

LayerQuestion to answerWhy it matters
ResistancesAre key resistances capped for the content you are running?Uncapped damage types make normal hits feel like one-shots.
Life or ESIs your main pool high enough for mistakes?Glass builds need cleaner execution and better gear.
RecoveryCan you recover after a partial hit?No recovery turns every mistake into a death spiral.
MobilityCan you leave danger quickly?Boss and rare mechanics punish slow repositioning.
Damage uptimeCan you deal damage while staying safe?Standing still too long is often the real failure point.

Checklist

  • Record your actual defensive stats before changing damage gear.
  • Separate map deaths from boss deaths; they often need different fixes.
  • Check whether your build guide assumes defensive gear you do not have.
  • Practice the boss movement pattern before forcing more damage.
  • Upgrade recovery and mobility before chasing a small DPS gain.

Example

A player may have enough tooltip damage for a boss but still fail because the build requires standing still during unsafe windows. The fix may be mobility timing, not a new weapon.

Common mistakes

  • Replacing defensive gear with damage gear too early.
  • Following a showcase build that assumes perfect positioning.
  • Ignoring recovery until every fight feels unfair.
  • Changing skills before identifying the death pattern.
